According to industry figures, leaflet distribution is worth over one billion a year and growing. This is because many companies are finding that by including letterbox marketing in their advertising mix, this re-enforces any promotion message that they are conducting. The DMA has also stated that door drop is used by 80 of the top 100 advertisers which is why you should get into this type of business.

Your Fist Step

First thing you would need to do is to get a feel for your market by doing a probe test, where you simply find out how interested or receptive the market is for leaflet distribution.

So what you do is, get the yellow pages and pick out twenty local businesses. Give them a call and say that you are calling from for example "ABC Leaflet distribution" and you are wondering if they would be interested in distributing leaflets to the local area. That is what you call a probe test. It instantly gives you an idea of the current state of the leaflet distribution market in your local area. You will find that some companies will tell you that they are thinking of doing this in the near future. You then simply ask them for their email address and say you will send them an e-brochure about your company and the services you offer.

Remember at this stage you haven't spent a penny, well only a couple of phone calls to get a feel of what the market is like.

Don't be dismayed if the results you get is less than expected, as even though it is recommended that you make around twenty calls, your sample is too small to tell you the true nature of the current demand.

After you make the few calls the next thing you should be thinking about is setting up your company. If you wish you can also start small and do business in your own name and get paid in cash. If you are getting paid 'cash in hand' it's up to you to sort out your taxes so that you do not run foul of the law.
